This workshop takes the knowledge and skills you gained in Traditional Game Design and applies them to the world of video games. You will learn about the tools and processes game designers use to create compelling video game levels while creating your own unique game experiences. You will also visit the headquarters of Valve Software, makers of the successful and critically acclaimed Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, and Portal franchises, where you will tour their offices, receive cool swag, and speak with the creators of your favorite games. You will leave this workshop with a greater understanding of the challenging work that professional game designers do, as well as the ability to create your own game designs.

  • Learn the tools of the trade: Examine how game designers use scripting languages, digital art tools, and game level editors to bring their gameplay ideas to life.
  • Visit Valve Software: Hear the creators of the Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, and Portal franchises talk about what it takes to design a wildly successful video game.
  • Level-up your knowledge: Learn about important mathematical concepts such as 2D and 3D coordinate systems while applying that knowledge to your own video game projects.
